Can you really be deficient in omega-3?
Yes, in the sense that your intake sits far below the reference value of 250 mg of EPA and DHA per day. Classic deficiency disease, as with vitamin C or D, is rare. But measurements of the omega-3 index show that many people in the Western world sit below 4–5 percent – the level researchers such as Harris and von Schacky have described as low. Surveys suggest roughly one in three adults eats fish less than once a week.
The symptoms below are therefore signals worth taking seriously, not diagnoses. Several of them can have entirely different causes.
Why does a low intake happen so easily? Because the only reliable source – oily fish – has become rarer on the plate. 9 signs you are getting too little omega-3
- 1. Dry, flaky skin. Fatty acids are building blocks of the skin barrier. With a low intake of polyunsaturated fat, skin can become dry and rough.
- 2. Dry eyes. DHA is an important component of the eye's tissues, and researchers have examined the link between low intake and dry, gritty eyes.
- 3. Trouble focusing. DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function. Several studies have looked at the link between low levels and concentration.
- 4. Low mood. In population studies, low fish intake has often co-varied with poorer mood – an association, not proven cause and effect.
- 5. Stiff joints in the morning. Omega-3 is part of the body's fat balance, and joint stiffness is one of the most studied areas.
- 6. Tiredness despite sleep. Non-specific, but commonly reported in people with a narrow diet.
- 7. Brittle nails and dull hair. Just like the skin, hair and nails are affected by the quality of your fat intake.
- 8. High triglycerides. On a blood test, raised blood fats are a clue – at 2 g/day, EPA and DHA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels.
- 9. You almost never eat fish. The clearest sign is your eating pattern. No fish, no eggs, no algae oil – then there is no source of EPA and DHA.
No single point is enough for a conclusion on its own. But the more that apply – especially combined with rarely eating fish – the greater the chance that a higher omega-3 intake would make a difference for you.
Who is at risk of running low?
- Anyone who eats fish less than once a week
- Vegans and vegetarians (ALA from plants converts to EPA and DHA at only a few percent)
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women, who have an increased DHA requirement

Could the symptoms be caused by something else?
Yes, and that is important to keep in mind. Tiredness, dry skin and concentration problems are among the most common complaints that bring people to a doctor, and they usually have explanations other than omega-3.
- Tiredness is more often linked to lack of sleep, stress, iron deficiency or low B12.
- Dry skin can be caused by dry indoor air, over-washing or skin conditions such as eczema.
- Low mood is a symptom that should always be taken seriously in its own right – not explained away by diet.

The only way to get a definite answer is to measure. The omega-3 index shows the proportion of EPA and DHA in your red blood cells and reflects your intake over recent months. Above 8 percent counts as good, below 4 percent as low. The alternative is simpler: count your fish meals per week. Fewer than two? Then you are probably below the reference intake.
